PRIME TOURIST SHOPS
[ Back to TOC]

In this section we’ll discuss some shops that have already been mentioned, but the following will also offer a broader selection of items for the island shopper whether you’re in search of alcohol, clothes, sandals, pharmacies, sunglasses, souvenirs, a candy bar, bottled water or whatever it may be.

AVENUE HIDALGO
A fun and decent area to shop but you won’t find much more than typical tourist items here. A variety of clothes, hammocks, blankets, sunhats, postcards, t-shirts and more, so enjoy browsing; you should find something. (Between Town Plaza and Avenue Madero)

FINAS ARTESANIAS
Adjacent to the SE corner of the town plaza, this may be the finest shop in Isla. The silver jewelry and authentic Mexican blankets are produced from a family of artisans from Oaxaca to Guadalajara. You’ll find handmade silver alloy dinnerware, silver and wood-carved candlesticks, plus an assortment of unusual and unique wood carvings. The clay work and hand-painted dinnerware are also worth a look in this quiet and lovely shop. (Corner of Morelos and Guerrero) - $$$

DONA ESTHER
This is a small food market (emphasis on small), but it’s used quite a bit by local families. Of most interest to our readers would be the cold beer singles available for carry-out much later at night than most places, plus its late night snacks. (Next to El Patio on Guerrero between Morelos and Madero) - $

SMALL MARKET
Across from the entrance to The Poc-Na Hotel is a tiny market with some beautiful hammocks, sunhats, womens beach wraps, Mexican blankets, necklaces, bracelets and more. No pressure, no hawkers, just quiet, open-air shopping. (Walk east in town on Matamoros nearly to the beach and across from Poc-Na Hotel) - $$
