BEST LOBSTER HOUSES
[Back to TOC]
Another loaded question on this island, it can be difficult to go wrong,
but if you’re going to spend some money on great lobster you’re going
to want it prepared as it should be. The following are some favorite
suggestions.
THE LOBSTER HOUSE
As mentioned before The Lobster House serves nothing but lobster and
for good reason, because it’s excellent! Check out the walls and dimly
lit corners of this place; it is a virtual museum of antique fishing gear
which offers up a colorful history of Cozumel’s legendary past as a tiny
fishing community.
(In the north hotel district across from The Hotel Playa Azul) - $$
LA LOBSTERIA
A great place for small groups or couples, this little restaurant has great
seafood in general and the lobster they serve is no exception. In their
fairly new location on a quiet corner just a short walk from town, it’s
away from the crowds and still a dinner only spot. The portions are
good-sized and the quality and preparation have always been to my
liking. I think you’ll like this place too, so enjoy!
(5 av. Sur and calle 7 sur) - $$
SABORES
Open only from noon – 4 p.m. with a menu that changes daily, you’ll
have to wing it here and see if they even have lobster on the menu when
you visit. If they do and they often do, you’ll be in for a treat! This is
a traditional Cozumel home, be respectful and don’t expect anything
fancy, but do expect food that is prepared with excellence, prices that
are very reasonable and tastes you will not soon forget. As mentioned
earlier, most people prefer to sit out in the backyard where they have
about 10 tables, it’s cool, hopefully breezy and the air is filled with the
calls of tropical birds. No alcohol at last check and cash only. Closed
weekends. (ave. 5 sur between calle 3&5 sur) - $
LA VERANDA
Yes, once again we have to mention La Veranda because, well, because
we love it. Very rarely have we heard anything negative about this
Cozumel
restaurant, the prices and servings always seem fair and it’s hard to beat
the atmosphere. All the lobster dishes will be prepared exquisitely like
everything else here. (calle 4 norte, 3-4 doors west of 5 av. Norte) - $$$
PRIMA TRATTORIA
If you’re sick of seeing this restaurant adorn these pages, you won’t be
after you’ve eaten here. Yes, the lobster is excellent, and so are all the
northern Italian seafood dishes offered here.
(A.R.Salas, just east of town square) - $$$
PUNTA MORENA AND THE NAKED IGUANA BAR
Imagine yourself at a 60’s era surfer hangout on the north shore
of Oahu and you could find yourself at the Naked Iguana Bar. Not
particularly attractive from the road, but walk up, set yourself down and
try the food. The owner Sandra and her staff dish out some excellent yet
simple tacos, seafood and in particular their lobster dishes. While it is
sort of a rundown local surfer destination, the food is not to be denied
because it’s wonderful. (a mile south of where Ave. Juarez meets the
beach on the far east side of the island) - $$
